Asia Business News (ABN) was a business news channel by Dow Jones and Company. It was founded in 1993 and it was based in Singapore. In 1998, the channel merged with NBC's CNBC Asia with most of ABN's programmes and presenters migrating to the new channel as well. The merged channel was initially named CNBC Asia Business News but in June 1998 it was simply referred to as CNBC Asia. Since the merger, CNBC Asia has been operating from ABN's former headquarters in Singapore.
Dow Jones, prior to the merger, was facing losses of nearly $48m per year on its European (merged with CNBC Europe) and its Asian operations combined, and at one point was considering closing the networks. Both CNBC Asia, and Asia Business News struggled to garner any meaningful share of themarket, and after a period of very bitter rivalry and competition, decided to merge. Under the new arrangement, the two companies would combine their services, keeping the CNBC logo but tapping The Wall Street Journal for news items and journalists.
The arrangement remains in place until at least 2012.
